Why I Don’t Follow the Mainstream Media - I Do Not Wish to Fill My Life With Bad News (5 of 5)

    By Life-Musings.com | February 15, 2009

How often do you hear someone remarking how terrible the world has become, how horrible it is today, and how apocalypse is near because the human race has turned oh-so-evil?

In my mind, I’m thinking – oh, please.

Do you really believe the world today is worse off than it was a hundred years ago, a millennium ago, or a few thousand years ago? Do you honestly believe that everything that is rife today – killing, murder, war, rape, human trafficking, slavery, hunger, exploitation, sodomy, pedophilia, etc, have not been around for uncountable centuries?

Have we forgotten the world wars, the Holocaust, the Christian crusades, the Inquisition, how women used to be (so much more) exploited, dictatorship, slavery, and all the atrocities which unfolded in the course of human history?

Now, get this. Our views of the world are shaped by what we read and what we watch. Nobody knows what is going on in the whole world. Well, no human does.

The news, by collecting and compacting most of the bad news in the world and shoving it in our faces in half an hour or a hundred pages, has successfully convinced us of how terrible mankind has become. In reality, has that much changed? Didn’t all these things happen in the past too? Just that, then, there was no television and internet to bring the latest misdeeds to us within literally seconds.

In fact, I would harbor a guess that things were even worse in the past. After all, so many things are better today – in many parts of the world, there is less looting, less killing, women can dress the way they want, women can now get a proper education and find work in society, we can walk safely in the streets after dark, etc. (of course, there is no means of telling if human beings have become “better”, per se, just that, maybe, we now have more structured laws in place to keep things in check).

How many times have you sighed after watching the news or reading the newspapers? I know I did; a lot.

This is the reality: Watching the news or reading the newspapers does not, in any way, make me any happier, improve any of my relationships, nor make my life in any way more fulfilling. In fact, watching the news on a daily basis made me a bitterer, unsatisfied and highly disillusioned person. It was as if I believed all the bad news that was on TV.

I have stopped watching the news or reading the papers for a good few years now. And, quite honestly, I do not find myself any worse off. I have other sources of information, some of which are non-mainstream media. And, the biggest news would always get to me, somehow, without me needing to seek them out.

If you find yourself thinking about how degenerated the world has become, then I would say, you have been successfully brainwashed by the mass media machine. The world has always been filled with atrocities.

And, on the flip side, how about good news? Wouldn’t there be a lot of good news in the world? You know, volunteer organizations, people giving up their lives to help the needy, people like Ron Paul who fight for the true liberty and interests of the American people, etc?

(Have you even heard of Ron Paul? If you haven’t, I’ll tell you why – you are only following the mainstream media. He isn’t exactly very popular with the media and corporations. Why? Because he is honest and true and stands up for what is right. Sounds familiar?)

In living a happy, abundant life, we must learn to surround ourselves with good things. People, issues, thoughts, emotions, vibrations. On the flip side, constant bad news is bad for mental and emotional wellbeing and even physical health. Why would you want to fill your head with it every single day?
