Why Do People Dream of a White Christmas?

    By Life-Musings.com | December 26, 2008

Generally speaking, I am hugely critical of the consumerism which Christmas now represents, or the Christmas which consumerism now represents, whichever way you look at.

Just now, I happened to be looking at an online Christmas postcard, and another though crossed my mind.

Why is it always snowing in Christmas scenes? Why is it a “white Christmas”?

It doesn’t even snow in many countries. And, during December, half of the world is having summer. It is so obvious that, like so many other aspects of Christmas, as well as Christianity in general, have been molded by the Western world.

Sure, it’s nice to have cold and freezing weather while we snuggle up indoors beside the fireplace to celebrate the warmth, both literally and metaphorically, of the Christmas season. But, how many people actually have a chance to experience that?

More importantly, how many of us have actually stopped to question the historically applicability of a “white Christmas”?

When and where Jesus was born, was it even snowing?

By the way, in case you are not aware, Jesus Christmas was never born on 25 Dec – it’s merely a pagan festival “imported” by a Roman Emperor to make Christianity more “palatable” to the people.
