When Things Become Too Easy and We Get Complacent
By Life-Musings.com | October 21, 2008
Do you play chess?
Or perhaps checkers?
When I’m up against a strong opponent, someone whom I know is a strong opponent, I tend to be pumped up, alert and very much high on my levels of concentration.
However, if, during the beginning part of a game, my opponent makes a mistake and gives me a piece or a quick advantage, I tend to let my guard down, and become perhaps a little too overconfident.
I become complacent. Sometimes, I even become cocky.
I’m not always made to pay for it. Often, I may still end up winning the game. But, sometimes, I lose, and it is largely down to my own lack of focus and concentration.
I extrapolate such an event to other experiences in life.
How many times have you messed something up, not because the task at hand was too large for you, or that things were too complicated, or that events took an unexpected turn for the worse, but rather simply because you allowed yourself to let your guard down?
Complacency can be a big problem. And, more often than not, the human psyche allows it to sink roots in situations whereby things get too comfortable or too easy for us.
It’s certainly something worth taking note of and guarding against.
