Making a Difference - Defining Your Circle of Influence
By Life-Musings.com | February 21, 2009
Let’s zoom in on a specific area in life which you are passionate about. It could be anything.
Are you frustrated that most of the world do not seem to understand the gravity of the situation? Are you annoyed that people cannot be bothered? Do you wish you could change people’s minds? Perhaps change the system? Do you wish you could “save the world”, so to speak?
Maybe you just want to make a difference, a really tangible difference, but you seem to be struggling to make it happen in the way that you want.
You may or may not have these thoughts and frustrations. And if you do, here’s a suggested way to approach the situation; I’m trying it out, too.
You have to think about how you want to define and “draw” your “circle of influence”.
It could be small. Say you decide to work on the issue in your own local community, with a small group of 100 or even 20 people - your potential to work closely with them and really change their lives is huge.
It could also be large. You could decide you want to influence a million lives. But if this is the case, you would have to be prepared to surrender a lot of your “power” - the bigger your circle of influence, the more potentially hapless you could be in the big world out there.
In the words of someone who asked me this question a few days ago - “do you want to be effective, or do you want to be a crusader?”
No right, no wrong; no better, no worse. The world needs all kinds. It’s a personal choice and decision.
