Is Bigger Necessarily Better? Do We Always ‘Know’ The Best Solution?

    By Life-Musings.com | November 27, 2008

The other day, the toilet bowl in my bathroom was clogged.

I had noticed that the ‘hole’ in the bowl seemed to be bigger than other toilet bowls, so I went out and bought the biggest plunger I could find.

So, there I was, plunger in hand, pumping away.

I went at it for two rounds. All in all, I was at it for easily more than an hour. But the water just wasn’t going down. I concluded that the plunger I had gotten wasn’t big enough to cover the entire ‘hole’ and create the necessary suction needed to clear the blockage. I then went to my neighbour to ask to borrow a bigger plunger.

Unfortunately, they only had a small one, one which was even smaller than the one I was using. I was darn sure it wasn’t going to work. But I was desperate. So I took it to give it a try.

When I used my neighbour’s smaller, black plunger, all it took were two pumps, which took about 5 sections, and the toilet bowl was clogged no more; the water went down quite instantly.

    I was quite stunned.

As it turns out, the reason why I wasn’t able to clear the blockage earlier was not because my plunger was too small, but rather, it was not able to create the proper suction needed because it was too big.

    Aargh.

I wasted more than an hour of my life in the bathroom. And suffered an unnecessary blister on my hand, too.

    Is bigger necessarily better?

Does what we think will work, what we think is the best solution for something, always turn out to be so?
