Introverts and Extraverts; Socializing and Solitude
By Life-Musings.com | December 23, 2008
I am a pretty strong introvert. Leave me alone, let me have a computer with an internet connection, a thought-provoking book, or beautiful natural scenery, and I am quite fine being on my own much of the time.
Of course, I am well aware of the adage that ‘no Man is an island’. And yes, I do enjoy socializing, to a certain extent.
Introverts, however, prefer spending quality time with a small group of people they are familiar and comfortable with. This is in contrast to extraverts, who would be fine with meeting new people all the time, something which would drain the life out of most introverts.
We must definitely realize that no one is a pure introvert or extravert; it’s not a discrete measure, but a continuum, with everyone lying somewhere along the scale. It’s like, no one is tall or short per se, just taller or shorter. And it is probable that we take on different personality traits in different situations.
Generally speaking, though, introverts love their alone-time, while extraverts can’t stand being alone. All in all, though, I have realized that I can learn so much from interacting with people. Even if I may not be very comfortable in some of the situations.
Along this vein, I would like to challenge extraverts to spend some time alone on a consistent basis. You will be surprised what solitude can do for you, and what you can learn about yourself and the world.
