Choices - Is It A Good Thing?
By Life-Musings.com | November 27, 2008
Ah. Freedom.
Ah. Choice.
Choice is king, right?
Man has gone through so much, fought so many wars, struggled through so many obstacles, to have the right and the freedom to choose.
Surely, choice must be king.
Yet, it has never been proven in any capacity that being able to choose, having choice, has made us happier overall.
Take for example marriage. Most marriages used to be arranged. Today, most of us get to choose our life partners. Yet marriages are falling apart at increasing rates. Surely, choice isn’t the decisive factor.
How about our parents? We never got to choose them (maybe we did, in the spiritual realm before we manifested as physical human beings, but that is another discussion for another time). Yet we make do. Or, at least, most of us do.
Do you think we would be any better off if all of us got to choose our parents?
In fact, more often than not, choice complicates, choice confuses, and choice even corrupts.
If I only had to decide between two cars, the decision will be relatively straightforward. But if I had a hundred choices, oh dear, this is going to take a while…
I’m not saying choice is bad. I think life without any freedom to choose is quite sucky.
But, on the flip side, choice also has its negative elements. We have to think harder. We have to ponder too many options. We stress ourselves out, often over nothing at all.
So, what is the sum result? Is choice, overall, good, bad, or neutral?
